How to Make the Devil Flee?

I receive many requests for prayer, and questions about prayer, from people who watch our program, and here is one that is often asked."I am a new Christian and am struggling to live the Christian life, but the devil seems to be living on my doorstep.  How can I become stronger?" Jacob.

Firstly, Jacob, you are not on your own. If truth be told, the devil visits us all from time to time. It is funny, but many people say the devil does not exist.  If he doesn't, I would sure like to know who runs his business!   The Bible says in 1 Peter 5:8, "Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."  Quite a descriptive description isn't it.

Firstly, we cannot overcome in our own strength.  How do we overcome him?  Jacob, every week in our church, our Pastors tell us 'Read your Bible every day', because only God knows the right & safe way for us poor sinners to live.  Philippians 4:13 says, "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength."  The only way to be victorious is to live in His presence. How do we live in His presence?  Jacob, the secret for personal Bible study is to put text with text.   Psalm 11:7 tells us, "The Lord is righteous and loves GOOD DEEDS: those who do them will live in His presence."    That text is only a short one, but what a BIG message in it!   It tells us how to live in His presence!  HOW? Through good deeds.

Obedience to God's Word is the fruitage of giving our hearts to God.  In 1 Peter 5:8 where it talks about the devil, the next verse says, "Resist the devil by standing firmly in your faith." How is faith built up?   Romans 10:17 tells us, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God!"   Once again it is back to reading THE BOOK, the BIBLE. The answer to your question, Jacob, is simply faith & obedience. Or, as the old hymn says, 'Trust & Obey'.  Another important part of living a victorious life is to praise God in both good and bad times.  A good Bible example of course is David in the Psalms.   He more then most felt the hot breath of the devil, but He learned early in life, because of his musical talents, that praising God sent the devil packing.

While it did not always remove the problem, it eased his anxiety and gave him peace. I love the words found in Psalms. 62 & 57  "My soul finds rest in you, O LORD, my salvation comes from You. You alone are my rock & my salvation; You are my fortress, I will never be shaken. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth, forever and ever!"

AMEN!
