Thousands request baptism

Thousands made decisions to be baptized at last night’s Carter Report program in Port Moresby. Unfortunately, we can’t tell you how many thousands.

With an audience around the 110,000 people mark, we needed about 300 ushers to collected all the decision cards. We only had about 60 ushers. That is one usher for every 1800 people. So gathering all the cards requesting baptism was an impossible task.

That’s typical of the problems of running a program three times larger than the Carter Report has ever done before. Conducting these meetings is a monumental task.

The local churches have organized hundreds of busses to bring people to the meetings. Thousands of cars bring others each night. It’s traffic bedlam for several miles around the Sir John Guise Stadium. Some people are not getting home until 2 a.m. from a meeting that ends at 8 p.m. But despite the extremely long night, the people keep coming back. The traffic jams are evidence of how great is the impact of the meetings.

Tonight’s program will feature something that’s almost certainly never happened before at an Adventist evangelistic campaign. Twenty Seventh-day Adventists have just been elected to the Papua New Guinea parliament. They and their spouses will gather on the Carter Report stage for a special dedication ceremony.

One of the newly-elected Adventists is a woman. Her election doubles the number of women in the PNG parliament.

The subjects for the next three Carter Report meetings are:

  • Friday night: “Five minutes after death.”
  • Saturday night #1: The blockbuster meeting “Who is the Anti-Christ of Bible prophecy?”
  • Saturday night #2: “The world of the Occult.”

Since we only have the stadium available for two weeks, we are running two programs one after the other on Saturday night. We did that in Honiara last year and it seemed successful.

With many people free of their Monday-to-Friday work commitments, we are expecting record crowds over the weekend.

Please pray for these three meetings. And pray for the thousands who have just committed themselves to be baptized.
