Prayer is a Two Way Conversation

As a new Christian in my teens, I was amazed to discover that God wanted us to have communion with Him!    The model prayer that Jesus taught the disciples, found in Matthew 6 and Luke 11, begins with "Our Father which art in heaven".  This gives us one of the main reasons 'Prayer Works'!     This first line tells me that the Great God of the Universe has invited us to call Him 'Father', which means He looks on us as His children.   The Bible teaches that God is our Creator and our Redeemer, and nothing delights Him more then to have His children commune with Him!

I love Hebrews 4:16  " Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, (is there any other) that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need."    God invites His children to come and be saved, and once we have accepted His grace, we are graciously invited to come into His throne room with confidence because Jesus Christ has made it possible.

The first lesson I learned was, if I believe the Bible, then I have to believe that God wants me to get to know Him intimately, and this is done through prayer.   Talking to God, and listening to God speak to me through His word is my very first duty.  Like any earthly relationship, friendship is built on two principles, talking and listening.   Over the years, I have discovered that the less I speak and the more I listen, the more profitable prayer is to me.     If you are a new Christian, that thought might at first seem a little strange.   I will go into more detail next time.

So, does prayer work?  YES, YES, YES!  A thousand times yes!  It works in many ways!   In the coming weeks, we will study God's word to discover how it works.  I will close with greetings to us all from the great apostle Paul: "Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you."  2 Thessalonians 3:16
