The Book of Proverbs.  (NIV)

(This Book divides men into two classes - the wise and the foolish.  May God help us to be among the former)

Chapter 1.
Verse 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:   V. 2 These are for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; V. 3 For acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair.   V.5  Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance - V.6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.   V. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
V.8  Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.  V.9  They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.  V10  My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

(In verses 10 to 14, we are admonished to not give into tempters or temptation)

V.15  My son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths.

(In verses 16 to 32, the Wise man writes about the consequences that come to us when we disobey the laws of God.  I also like to look at the teachings in the Book of Proverbs as “WORDS TO LIVE BY”.   I have often wondered why so many of us fail to learn lessons from the mistakes of others.  Why do we so often close our eyes to the consequences that happen all the time around us to those who refuse to obey God’s laws and rules for living?   Do we have to end up in the ‘gutter’ before we realize that alcohol and drug taking  (cocaine, heroin etc) is harmful and destructive?  Do we have to end up in jail before we learn that taking what is not ours is wrong.   Does inappropriate behavior with another man’s wife have to end in destroying two families before both participants wake up to how wrong it is.   Why do so many lie before they see the resulting havoc that it causes to those involved.  I could go on and on.   In this very important Book of Proverbs, the Wise man is trying to instruct us so that we will avoid the consequences of falling into the Pit of Sin.   However, if we do stumble and find ourselves there, remember, Jesus is always ready to reach out His hand and lift us out.)

Verse 33: Whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear or harm.

May God help us to listen and apply the lessons from this marvelous Book.  We will consider more of the wisdom and instruction of Proverbs over the next few weeks.

Blessings on you,
Beverley Carter
