January 2012

If you are like me, you are probably feeling  more then a little weary from the ‘happenings’ of 2011.   Wars here and wars there; leaders being killed or ousted; the so called ‘Spring of Protest’; terrible natural disasters; (the horrendous earthquake in Japan; the many horrifying tornados in the USA) the European and US financial crisis; just to mention a few.

As a result of our technology, we have instant pictures and news of all that is happening around the world.   I sometimes feel that I have been through some kind of a marathon, and I would like to go to a desert island to have a good long rest!  Unfortunately, for most of us that is just not possible.

While none of us can fix the problems of the world, here are a few thoughts on how we can prepare ourselves for what lies ahead in 2012.

Firstly, we need to begin the New Year with a ‘clean slate’.  If we have sinned against God lets read and believe the words of 1 John 1:9  “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and will cleanse us from all our unrighteousness.”

Acts 10:43  “All the prophets testify about Him that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.”

John 3: 16  “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that who-so-ever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

When there is nothing standing between us and our Savior, then Proverbs 3:5-6 can be fulfilled in our lives;  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path.” (All during 2012)

One of the greatest discoveries of my life was that God communicates with us personally through His Word. As I read His Word, believe it, and live it, God will direct my life.

Ephesians 5: 15-17  “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

What is said of the Book of Proverbs in chapter 1 can be said of every book of the Bible.

Proverbs 1: 1-7  “The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for attaining wisdom and       discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young----- let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance---for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

We can be sure that we will all have many challenges this year, both in the world around us, and to us personally.  While there will be times of uncertainty, here are some things we can be certain of and should fill our hearts with hope and joy!

1.     Proverbs 2:10-11  “When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you: understanding will keep you.”

2.     2 Timothy 1:7  “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”.

3.     Proverbs 3:25-26  “Do not be afraid of sudden terror,  (catastrophes in the world) nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes; for the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught”.

4.     Hebrews 10:35-36  “Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.  For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise”.

5.     Jeremiah 31:3  The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying:  “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness I have drawn you”.

Dear friends, God loves us very much and His words found in the Bible give us all the instruction for a good and fruitful life that we need.

I was regretting the past, and fearing the future......

Suddenly my Lord was speaking;

“My Name is ‘I AM’.

When you live in the past with it’s mistakes and regrets, my Name is not ‘I WAS’.

When you live in the future, it is hard. I am not there.   My Name is not ‘I WILL BE’.

When you live in the moment, it is not hard.  I am here; for my name is ‘I AM’!! “    Anonymous

Have a very Happy and Healthy New Year!

Blessings and love,  Beverley Carter
