Is being successful the most important goal in life?

By Beverley Carter

The values and ethics of the world are often very different from those of Christians.

Let’s consider, for example, the moral characteristic of honesty. Many people today think nothing of lying. To them, the end justifies the means. As long as they ultimately get what they want, they will use any means necessary to achieve their goal.

Another big difference is how individuals are valued. To the world, one's value is often based on external beauty, monetary wealth or professional achievement. In today’s society, successful athletes and actors are highly esteemed, sometimes even idolized. On the other hand, many look down on those who have not achieved worldly success.

For a few moments, let’s look at God's evaluation of the human race. Is it success? Is it perfection?

Fortunately, we don't have to guess for the answer. It’s found in 1 Corinthians 4:2 – "Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful."

God is not asking us to be successful; He is asking us to be faithful to Him. (We have been entrusted with the Gospel and Scripture; therefore, we need to be faithful stewards.)

This doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for excellence in whatever job, work or profession we find ourselves, but first and foremost, we must be faithful to God.

Matthew 25:21 – His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness.

Revelation 2:10 – Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer…Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.

We can be faithful because we have a Heavenly Father who is faithful to us.

1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear…He will provide a way out.

I love this verse found in Deuteronomy 7:9 – "Know therefore that the LORD your God is God! He is the Faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands."

Praise the LORD!
