Was Peter the “rock” upon which the true church was built?

By John Carter

QUESTION:  Was the Church built on Saint Peter, as Jesus apparently indicated in Matthew 16:17-18?

ANSWER:  The true Church is built upon the living Christ, the false Church is built upon a dead man.  Let me explain:  Peter had just given a marvelous testimony.  He said to Jesus, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”  It is upon that mighty truth that the true Church is built.  This is the eternal Rock on which God’s Church securely rests.  All the way through Holy Scripture, Christ the second person of the Godhead, is called the Rock, “…That Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4).  See also the following texts: Deuteronomy 32:4,15,18,31 and Psalm 18:2,31,46; 28:1; 62:2; 78:35; 92:15.  Christ, the Living Rock, permanent, safe, secure, immovable and everlasting, is the foundation on which His Church is built.  “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  (1 Corinthians 3:11)

Jesus is the Rock because He alone is the Son of the Living God, and lives forevermore.  Peter, earnest, bold and impetuous, denied his Lord with cursing and swearing and for a brief moment in time the gates of hell did prevail against him.  He later repented and became a pillar in the church. (Galatians 2:9)  Then after a life of devoted service to his Lord, Peter fell asleep and now awaits the coming resurrection.  He is not in heaven but one day will be with his blessed Savior in Paradise.  It is therefore inconceivable that Peter, the man God eventually transformed into a little rock, could be the foundation of God’s Church.  Peter became a temporary rock, but Christ is the eternal Rock of our salvation.

Remember, a dead church is built upon a dead man, but the true church is built upon our living Lord.  Man’s religion is built upon a man.  God’s religion is built upon God the Son.
