America's Birthday

By John Carter

I will never forget my grand daughter's birthday—it is the 4th of July. Birthdays are important and the 4th of July for more than 300,000,000 of us is the birthday of the land we love.  There are so many good things about America or else so many would not be trying to get here. Tens of thousands of desperate mothers in Central America are sending their children, 70,000 of them, to the US-Mexican border. This usually entails a long and dangerous journey. The final outcome is by no means certain with the threat of deportation hanging over the heads of these little victims from violent and politically troubled countries.
Their mothers send them because America is still, in spite of many problems, their best hope. America stands for freedom, prosperity and the chance to pursue unhindered a life worth living. That's a lot more than they can expect in their poverty-stricken lands that are often ruled by drug lords, pompous prelates and corrupt politicians.
Have you ever seriously asked the pertinent questions: Why is America different? Why is America better than many countries that by nature are endowed with greater riches? The answer is simple and clear, though often unrecognized by those who have eyes that cannot see and ears that cannot hear. America is better than those lands of the desperate mothers because America was built upon a better foundation. Those benighted places were built by an oppressive church and ruled by religious dictators who kept the people in superstition and darkness. The Bible was a banned and banished book. The Inquisition was in and freedom was out. By contrast, America was founded by the pious Puritans who came from Europe with their Bibles to escape the persecutions of that same religion that brought so much suffering to Latin America.
The Bible—read, studied, believed, and followed—has a wonderful way of making people better. It makes a nation great in every possible way. Look around you, study faces, and you will discover that the happiest people are those who follow Christ and obey His Word. The religion of the Pilgrim Fathers brought peace and prosperity, and America is still living in the fading glow of those far off days.
When you celebrate The 4th of July this year, remember what made America the dream destination for the oppressed of the Earth. Remember that manmade religion is a curse and that only Christ and His Word satisfy the deepest needs of the human heart.  Remember the words of the God-man who said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life," and "I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly."
July 4th then becomes more than an opportunity to feast and party, it becomes an opportunity to rediscover our spiritual roots.
