When young women ask me this, I usually begin with the same counsel I give to the young men. Become the best that you can be by developing the qualities, through prayer and Bible study, that will help you to become a Godly woman. Doing so will allow you to become the kind of woman that a Godly man will seek.
Don't rush into marriage, as it is a lifetime commitment. Finish your education. Don't be taken in by men who tell you that if you truly love them, you will prove it by going to bed with them even though you aren't married. Fornication can mean extramarital sex, but it usually means sex before marriage. Yes, we all know in today's world that the Christian view on sex is looked on as outdated and foolishness, but we only need to look at the consequences, (broken homes, unwed mothers, and broken people) to know who is being foolish. God's laws are for the protection and happiness of the human race, but society is quickly breaking down as Christian morals decline. And as the family goes, so goes the nation.
Here are a couple of texts amongst many:
"For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications…" – Matthew 15:19
"Flee fornication…" – 1 Corinthians 6:18
Young ladies, I encourage you to keep yourselves pure and clean while waiting on God to bring the right man into your life. (If some are reading this and you have made mistakes in this area, please ask God for forgiveness, know that He loves you, and by His grace you can still live a life that will glorify Him.)
Poem by a 12th Century Nobleman:
True love is a sacred flame that burns eternally.
And alone can dim its special glow or change its destiny.
True love speaks in tender tones and hears with gentle ear.
True love gives with open heart and True Love conquers fear.
True love makes no harsh demands. It neither rules nor binds.
True love holds with gentle hands the hearts that it entwines.
Dear young ladies, I pray that you will fulfill the words found in Proverbs 31:28-31 – “Her children show their appreciation, and her husband praises her. He says, ‘Many women are good wives, but you are the best of them all.’ Charm is deceptive and beauty disappears, but a woman who honors the LORD should be praised. Give her credit for all she does. She deserves the respect of everyone.”
Blessings to you all, Beverley Carter
P.S. – Next time I will write about "being submissive to your husbands" as found in Ephesians 5. There are always questions about this one.
