For What Are You Thankful?

As we look around at our broken world, it can be difficult to find reasons to be thankful. There is war in the Middle East and Africa; dictators rule in many countries, oppressing their people in complete poverty; diseases such as Ebola ravage and kill thousands; fear of terrorism is ubiquitous; famine plagues Ethiopia and other countries; climate change is wreaking havoc in certain areas; and moral decay is destroying the family unit, striking at the heart of civilization.
Many people worship things or “gods” such as money, the possession power or even themselves, instead of worshiping the God of Heaven, the Creator of the Universe. “He made us, and His we are.” – Psalm 100:3.

Here are some things for which I am thankful:

  1. Jesus came to Earth, died on a cross and rose again, so that my sins could be forgiven and I could receive the gift of eternal life.
  2. The promise that God will always lead me and guide my steps.
  3. The promise of the Holy Spirit.
  4. The promise that God will comfort me and provide me with peace, no matter the circumstances.
  5. The promise of Christ’s Second Coming and that one day all will be made right.
Although the Thanksgiving holiday occurs only once annually, we should incorporate an attitude of thankfulness into our daily lives, celebrating “thanks” every day. Doing so is just a matter of learning to live with a spirit of gratitude.
In the words of the Psalmist:
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before His presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His Name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations. – Psalm 100
